Metroplex did appear in the Scramble City anime special in 1986 in Japan along with Ultra Magnus, Prime, Trypticon and a whole boatload of combiners. Perhaps he was in stasis lock or still on cybertron? We will never know as toy based characters just appeared on the show frequently with no explanation of how any of them met or where they came from before appearing on earth (HINT: it was the toy factory). So apparently Metroplex was out to lunch during the events of the movie.

Unless the Decepticons invited Trypticon along, who also doesn’t appear in the movie despite both toys featuring in the 1986 pack in Toy catalog, and in TV advertisements, along with the Scramble City combiners. It would likely have been a one sided battle in favor of the Autobots and a fairly short movie. If metroplex had been around for this opening movie battle, he could have beaten back the deceptions almost single handedly. So where the heck was Metroplex during the battle of Autobot City…Īnd why is Metroplex also referred to as Autobot City? This is the kind of nonsense that festers in my mind decades later, when I inevitably rewatch the film today and see… no reference to Metroplex whatsoever. The sense of urgency during the attack sequence is palpable, if not for Hot Rod spotting the sneak attack moments before it happened, our heroes could have fallen right here in these moments with perhaps no survivors.
While the battle rages the Autobots convert the city into its battle mode with various guns, turrets and physical blast shields appearing, such as the one that memorably traps a desperate Starscream’s foot. The Cons attack, Autobots defend, Prime and Megatron fight to the death. Including a more traditonal design that used high walls surrounding the perimeter aping garrisons and forts in the ancient world.
There are various designs and concepts that were eventually synthesized into the final version we see on screen. Autobot Cities towers and ramps are in the style of Metroplex. This same name creates an association of the outpost, and the robot Metroplex in the minds of fans even though Metroplex does not appear in the 1986 Transformers movie, but did appear in the toyline of the same year.Īutobot City shares some similar features to Metroplex in his battle and city alt modes.
